Urgent Call for Enormous Quantity of Knitted Woolen Articles Row land Chapter Busy Correspondence of The Robesonian. Rowland, Aug. 18 The following telegram has been received by Mr. A. L. Bullock, chairman of the local Red Cross chapter: "Atlanta, Ga., Aug. 15, 1917. "The Red Cross has an urgent call from Major Grayson Murphy for an enormous quantity of knitted woolen articles. The cablegram from Major Murphy follows: " 4 Last winter broke all records for cold and misery among people here. We inexpressibly dread the coming winter finding us without supplies to m.eet the situation and urge you on behalf of our soldiers and those of our allies who will suffer in their frozen trenches, and also thousands of French and Belgian refugees and repatriates being returned through Switzerland to France. Begin ship ping at once 1,500,000 each of warm knitted woolen articles already re quested. They must come before cold weather, and in view of shortage of fuel and other discomforts they will be of incredible value in both military an dcivilan work.' ( Signed) Murphy.' "Your chapter is sslced to furnish a definite number of this requirement. Your allotment is 100 sweaters, 100 mufflers, 100 pairs of wristlets, 100 pairs of socks. Full instruction fol; low in two days. Ask your members to finish all knitting work now on hand and clear the decks for action. We want every chapter to have a chance to do its part in making good on this call for help from France. "Chapter chairmen are requested to place a copy of the foregoing part of this message, including the cablegram from Major Murphy, with all news papers with request to give lull pub licity to this first call, then get your knitting: committee together and line them up for a rush job. "GUY E. SNAVELY, "Director Southren Division Ameri can Red Cross." The knitting is in the hands of Mrs. D. D. McLaurin and Miss Bessie McKay. Many have volunteered to knit and to teach others to knit. We hope soon to have yarn and those knit will be glad to meet in sewing room, and teach any who wish to learn. We hope to be able soon to fill our chapter's allotment. It will take some money and sacrifice of time but we are willing to give it.
